The Goodnight Kiwi

Living in the seventies in New Zealand. No internet, no cellphones.

I, felt the sunshine hit my face

We were forced outside to embrace

The magic kingdom of our backyard space

Where we ran, and hid and mucked about

On sunny days mums would all decide

That kids and dogs were banned from inside

I, hung with children down the road

Our mums were all in gossip mode

Said they all wished they known the code

At our age. The grownup secrets of life

What thrills this knowledge would allow

So I thought. why not tell us now?

I, still remember perfectly, living in the seventies

We watched everything on TV, till the Goodnight Kiwi.

We, had such certainty, living worry free

We watched everything on TV, till the Goodnight Kiwi.

Our, weekend fun came for free

I looked to climb the biggest tree

I fell out of one and cut my knee

but luckily my parents never knew

Idyllic endless summer days

Following every TV craze

I, still remember perfectly, living in the seventies

We watched everything on TV, till the Goodnight Kiwi.

We, had such certainty, living worry free

We watched everything on TV, till the Goodnight Kiwi.

And, clear memories I have of you

Bleached hair and eyes of blue

A tie-dyed vision, how you flew

Listening to the same refrains

A summer painted pastel still remains

Oh yeah!

I, still remember perfectly, living in the seventies

We watched everything on TV, till the Goodnight Kiwi.

We, had such certainty, living worry free

We watched everything on TV, till the Goodnight Kiwi.
