Deepest Cut

Well, we went but the 2023 Auckland Elton John concert didn’t happen (a biblical storm hit) so my lyric is based on the videos I’ve watched, of basically the same setlist and performance that we would have seen.

This is about (selfish) me longing that all concerts (not just EJ’s) included the deep tracks that talk to me, as well as the hits too, with the realisation it’s a futile wish. A concert is not one’s own Spotify list. And in the end thats ok.

Prelude.

I saw you twice for twenty quid

When you were just a kid

But in Auckland I missed you

For you had no one to sing to

When the rain set in

——-

V1

Reggie and his band kick off

The crowd are young and old enough

They play all the money hits

All the familiar keyboard bits

Say can you give a little bit more?

CH

Hey there

You are still a kid inside

The stage is still the best place to hide

The great classic songs are your pride

But the deeper cuts

Cut deepest

To me

V2

The words that a wiseman says

Or the the piano of the pigeon plays

Get no airing this time round

No high flying bird leaves the ground

And its shadow never blocks the sun

CH

V3

You still have fire flying from your hand

Wow. The tightness of your band

I know you got a bunch of hits to sing

And you can’t play everything

I want to love you forever

BR

You sing for your supper, true

But that’s ok

It’s me who’s forgiving you

CH
