V1
She quietly left on a starlit night
I couldn’t make her stay
I thought I was her anchor
But those stars pulled her away
No fight,
Or angry tears
Her blue eyes held no rage
In my mind I poured half a dictionary
Onto an empty page

She touched my lips
With her fingertips
And whispered
Don’t follow me down
–
CH
Fifty thousand stars
Frame you in my memory
Fifty thousand times
I saw but didn’t see
I had fifty thousand words
But I could not find the few
To show you all the feelings
That I always felt for you
–
V2
All those many words I kept
A crop for me to reap
I tried to use them miserly
Each word had to earn its keep
Now I write to repair the silence
I write but never send
I write to seek the ending
To a never-ending end
–
CH
Fifty thousand stars
Frame you in my memory
Fifty thousand times
I saw but didn’t see
I had fifty thousand words
But I could not find the few
To show you all the feelings
That I always felt for you
–
BR
I dreamt I saw you distant
on a winter night
I ran
but couldn’t catch you
Then you faded
into spiral mist
rising from the sea
–
CH
Fifty thousand stars
Frame you in my memory
Fifty thousand times
I saw but didn’t see
I had,
Fifty thousand words
But I could not find the few
To show you all the feelings
That I always felt for you
